Photographs by Victor R. Caivano

“Beware, my body and my soul, beware above all of crossing your arms and assuming the sterile attitude of the spectator, for life is not a spectacle, a sea of griefs is not a proscenium, and a man screaming is not a dancing bear.” – Aimé Césaire 1

Victor R. Caivano is a staff photographer for the Associated Press. He has traveled extensively in Latin America and the Middle East, covering news stories including post-war in Kandahar and Baghdad, Hurricane Mitch and the ravages of glue addiction among street children in Honduras.

His photographs cut to the bone with their stark beauty and gripping portrayal of lives in flux. The people within embody the fragility and tenacity of the human spirit in the midst of crushing uncertainty and social upheaval.
