Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo – Pop Grotesque
Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo is a graphic designer & filmmaker based in Granada, Spain. In discovering his art (via Creep Machine) I was immediately drawn to his eerie, brightly-colored renderings of icons from popular culture.
From a recent interview with VforVlog:
I am inspired mainly by film, by classic icons of B movies, horror films or cult films, classic film muses and memorable scenes . . . in general, I am inspired by the different forms of expression that people use, the way they dress or wear their hair, etc. I like to reach a counterpoint between fashionism and what is grotesque, sinister or perverse.
I am interested in distorting appearances to focus on what is grotesque. I also like to add a disturbing feeling to my characters.1
