Magnum Opus: Pete Rock & CL Smooth Reminisce over “T.R.O.Y.”

As a DJ I can’t remember ever dropping Pete Rock & CL Smooth’s “T.R.O.Y.” without eliciting a collective sigh of appreciation from the crowd. The infectious saxophone hook by Tom Scott, the resolute drum beat layered in by Pete Rock along with CL Smooth’s gripping ode to life and its struggles make for an experience that is cathartic and uplifting…not to mention catchy as hell.

In the third episode of Complex TV’s Magnum Opus, the Hip Hop legends detail how their classic 1992 single came to fruition. They cover a lot of ground, from their early days as a duo, to being mentored by Heavy D & The Boyz, to the tragic loss of their friend Troy Dixon and how they channeled that experience to create one of the most beloved Hip Hop tracks of all time.

Of course, it’s impossible to watch the episode without immediately wanting to hear the tune in its entirety, so without further ado:
